Mesmeric Messi nets double as Barca romp past Bayern | Reuters

After Barca had been frustrated by the brilliance of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for most of the match, Messi fired home after 77 minutes and then doubled the lead with a delightful chip from six metres three minutes later.

Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were among those sidelined in an injury crisis for Bayern, but a masked Robert Lewandowski started in attack despite fracturing his nose and jaw in his sides recent defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup.

The German champions slowly woke up and should have scored on the counter when Lewandowski slid a Thomas Mueller cross wide after 17 minutes.

Barcelona’s first clear sight of goal came after 11 minutes when Luis Suarez scampered clear of the Bayern defence and was denied by a superb block from the feet of Neuer. “It’s bitter, we had our chances but we lost possession, they break and that should not happen.”

Messi and Suarez were both showing delightful touches as they teased the Bayern backline while Neymar on the left side of their attacking trident found it more difficult to get into the game.

Barca continued to pass up opportunities in the second half before Messi scored made the breakthrough with a 20-metre drive that beat Neuer at his near post.

Minutes later a close range effort from Neymar was deflected wide by Rafinha.

“We played ok for long periods of time but we were caught on the break three times,” Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said.

“When Messi is inspired he is unstoppable and tonight he showed his talent again,” Barcelona centre back Gerard Pique told Spanish television.

BARCELONA Two late moments of Lionel Messi magic and a goal from Neymar helped Barcelona break the resistance of Bayern Munich in a pulsating 3-0 victory in their Champions League semi-final first leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

He then capped an excellent performance by lifting the ball expertly over Neuer for a record 77th Champions League goal and providing the pass for Neymar’s crucial late third.

He had warned before the game that it was impossible to stop his former prodigy Messi and it proved the case as the Argentine orchestrated Barcelona’s emphatic victory that gives them a clear advantage heading into next week’s second leg. .

It was a disappointing evening for Bayern coach Pep Guardiola on his return to his former club.

Atletico de Madrid defeats Juventus FC 1-0 in UEFA Champions League Group A play – Los Angeles Soccer

However, the Italian giant was outshot by the Spanish club, eight to five.

Both sides did not create much with their attack as both played very conservative. As a result, the game ended with only a few shots on goal and a lone goal.. In fact, all four teams in Group A have three points, but placements are determined by goal differential. The ball control was clearly in favor of the three-time consecutive Italian champions by 65 percent. As Atletico had lost their first game against Greek club team Olympiacos FC 3-2 two weeks prior.

Lionel Messi wins 2011 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award

The UEFA announced on Thursday (August 25) results of the 201112 Champions League group stage draw.

To earn a nomination for the new award, which replaces the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award claimed in 2010 by FC Internazionale Milano’s Diego Milito, players were judged by their performances during the 2010/11 campaign in all competitions, both domestic and international, and at club and national team levels.

UEFA Champions League Winners List and Short History

However, after Inter Milan and Bayern Munich defied bookies and reached the final last year anything could happen is this year’s Champions League!

In its modern form the Champions League has 3 stages; First there is the qualification stage for the clubs who do not qualify automatically, then when the main competition begins there is a group stage consisting of 8 groups of 4 teams. It started out as a straight forward knockout football competition in 1955, in which only the club champions of each European country could enter.

What’s more, participating clubs also receive TV revenue on top of prize money which again is highly lucrative considering that the Champions League final is the most watched sporting event in the world with around 100 million global viewers. Even if a club lost every match in the group stage of the Champions League they would still walk away with 3.3 million..

Champions League MedalWhat is now known as the UEFA Champions League began life as the European Champions Club Cup and did not change its name to the Champions League until 1992. Both Valencia and Stade Reims have reached the Champions League final twice but lost on both occasions. As ever Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid have been ranked as favourites for the competition. In its current form the Champions League also allows more than national champions to enter with countries such as England and Spain having 4 teams qualify for the competition.

Champions League Prize Money and TV Ratings

The European cup is a highly lucrative competiton for football clubs in the modern era with Champions League prize money reaching up to 36.4 million for a championship winning campaign. Here is a list of all the Champions League winners:

Football Team – Times Won – Years WonReal Madrid – 9 titles – 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1998, 2000, 2002AC Milan – 7 titles – 1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2007Liverpool FC – 5 titles – 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005Bayern Munich – 4 titles – 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001Ajax – 4 titles – 1971, 1972, 1973, 1995Barcelona – 3 titles – 1992, 2006, 2009Inter Milan – 3 titles – 1964, 1965, 2010Manchester United – 3 titles – 1968, 1999, 2008Benfica – 2 titles – 1961, 1962Juventus – 2 titles – 1985, 1996Nottingham Forest – 2 titles – 1979, 1980Porto – 2 titles – 1987, 2004Celtic – 1 title – 1967Hamburg – 1 title – 1983Steaua Bucuresti – 1 title – 1986Marseille – 1 title – 1993Feyenoord – 1 title – 1970Aston Villa – 1 title – 1982PSV Eindhoven – 1 title – 1988Red Star Belgrade – 1 title – 1991Borussia Dortmund – 1 title – 1997It can be seen that Real Madrid and AC Milan have been most prolific in the Champions League throughout history, but in the modern era Barcelona have dominated with 3 wins in the last 18 years. Only 12 teams have managed to win the competition more than once and the record for most wins is held by Real Madrid with a tally of 9. Given all this it is no surprise that the Champions League is considered the biggest and best club football competition in the world.

Champions League Winners List

Since the Champions League competition began in 1955 there have been 21 different clubs who have lifted the trophy. In terms of country wins the Champions League has been held the most in Italy, Spain and England with 12 titles for Spain and Italy and 11 titles for England.

The current Champions League champions are Inter Milan but the 2010/2011 competition is already underway and so it will not be long until there is a new title added to this list. 2 teams qualify from each group through to the knockout stage of the Champions League

The History Of Match Attax Football Trading Cards

Tesco even had their own exclusive subset produced ‘Match Attax England Legends’ containing all the England World cup heros from the past.

Nearly named ‘Match Attack’ until the last moment these new cards were an instant success with UK collectors. Kids can be quietened for hours with just a few 50p packs of the latest cards.

The internet has also played a massive part in the life of ‘Match Attax’. The German Bundesliga Has it’s own Match Attax series and other sports such as ice hockey and wrestling now have an ‘Attax’ branded trading card.

Other web sites have popped up around the brand two. Over time Topps have developed a really engaging website to compliment the brand, recently introducing ‘Match Attax Live’ where fans can play the game online with other collectors.

The 2010 World cup two more massively popular ‘Match Attax’ series were produced, one for the UK market ‘Match Attax England’ and one for the rest of the world called ‘Match Attax World Stars’.

Tesco played a big part in the promotion of the ‘Match Attax England’ series. Besides the addictive nature of assembling any collection there is also a really simple yet engaging two player game that can be played in minutes and almost anywhere. Five years on and Match Attax Cards are still a school yard craze (although you will find them banned in my school playgrounds). Due to the fact you open a random selection of cards in any packet then towards the end of assembling any collection finding the exact cards you need can be an expensive and frustrating job. Footycards.com, who have been producing this service from the very start of ‘Match Attax’ has helped thousands of collectors to ‘Finish their book’ simply and easily.

Footycards can sell you any card or cards you need to finish off your collection eliminating the biggest problem with any trading card collection, swaps. A further three year extension deal was agreed in 2010 between topps and the FA.

A growing craze, in the first two seasons the brand scooped sales of an estimated 32.2 Million pounds. In 2007 Topps wrestled the UK premier league rights for trading cards and stickers from Magic Box international who had been producing ‘Shoot out’ trading cards for the premier league. There are several ever popular forums which bustle with news of the latest rumours and info as well as the now famous footycards.com. The success of the brand is not just down to the ever popularity of Premier league football. Topps signed a three year exclusivity deal with the Premier league for an undisclosed amount

Temperament Key To Atp Tennis Tournaments

If Murray is going to make this step up, online tennis betting pundits believe he will need to avoid the pitfalls that both Serena and Andy Roddick failed to avoid.

With the heat at the US Open really not helping players keep their cool, this year’s competition is looking increasingly likely to be won by players who are able to endure the mental highs and lows that are part and parcel of every Grand Slam event on the tour..

With stars at the top level of all sports increasingly turning to sports psychologists in order to help them keep their cool and take control of the mental aspects of their game, with a prime example of the success this can generate being Arsenal’s victory against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, the use of a psychologist is perhaps something that both Serena Williams and Andy Roddick could have done with recently; both players saw US Open exits (granted Serena’s last year being the more severe incident) aided by a loss of composure at the key moment.

By: Stuart McGill

With ATP tour odds pundits noting that individuals such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal the players who have shown themselves the most capable of pulling out all the stops when they are under pressure, compared to Brit Andy Murray who often finds himself like a rabbit in the headlights when faced with big mental challenges, making the final step and upping his game in a final of a Grand Slam event is something he needs to work on. With sports stars, including the top tennis players in the world, reaching heights never before thought achievable, and players able to reach very similar levels of ability and talent (take, for example, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer), the difference between success and failure at the top is increasingly being put down to an ability to control temperament when it really counts
